What to wear?
The first question I’m usually asked when booking a session is “What do we wear?” My answer is usually the same…”What you want to.” This is your session, they are your pictures so wear something that you are comfortable in. Wear something that you aren’t going to look back at the pictures and say to yourself, “Why did I wear that?!”
The one thing that I do try and ask is be different. Don’t go for the same style outfit on everyone, ie: white shirt, jeans, etc. I’m not saying that everyone needs to show up in pink polka dots and plaid shorts but try to find something that fits everyone’s style.
A few things you can remember for the day of your session:
- Stick to one style – While everyone loves to be casual, make sure everyone is. Don’t put Dad in a suit/tie, while you’re in jeans and a t-shirt.
- Colors don’t have to match, but they do need to go together – Like I said before, let’s not try and put the pink polka dots with the green plaid shorts. Try to keep colors in the same color palette. Smaller patterns on part of an outfit look fine, but keep it to one or two people in your group. Patterns should compliment each other, not draw attention away from the main subject of the photo, which is you!
- Bring a change of clothes – It’s nice to have some variety in your session. On most location sessions, you will have the opportunity to change clothes, so do it. Change it up a bit and plus it adds a little variety to your photos.
- Should you bring props? – Should you do it? Bring them? Sure! We are always looking for something different to do. Did you meet at a football game? Bring a football and we can incorporate that into your shoot. Do you ride a motorcycle? We’ll find a location to make sure we add your lifestyle to your pictures.
A few things to remember the days before the shoot.
- Hands and Feet – Be sure that your hands and feet are clean. I know it sounds like your mom saying make sure you leave the house with clean underwear but if you are having a maternity, infant or engagement session especially, we like to take detail shots of hands and feet so you want to make sure they are clean and either free of chipped nail polish or they are freshly polished.
- Hair and Make-up – I do not offer hair and make-up but I do work with MUA’s and hair stylists on a session basis. They are not paid by me but by you and if you would like to have your hair and make-up done professionally, I will gladly have them on hand the day of your session for an additional cost.
